LEGEND OF THE AMERICAN STREET AND HIP-HOP SCENE

Estevan Oriol is one of the most recognizable photographers in the contemporary Los Angeles scene and a reference figure in the visual documentation of American urban culture.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Oriol has built an extraordinary photographic archive over the last thirty years that tells the universe of Californian street culture from the inside: hip-hop, lowrider culture, tattoo art, gang life, skateboarding, and the city’s nightlife.

His photography is immediate, raw, and deeply authentic. Oriol does not observe the street from afar: he is part of it.

This has allowed him to shoot portraits and reports with unique access to communities and environments that are usually difficult to document.

Throughout his career, he has photographed some of the most iconic figures of international pop and music culture, including Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill, as well as numerous artists, actors, and personalities connected to American underground culture.

His images have been published in international magazines and used for album covers, editorial campaigns, and art projects.

His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, solidifying his role as one of the leading visual storytellers of contemporary Los Angeles.

In 2020, the documentary LA Originals, distributed by Netflix, told his story and his long-standing collaboration with the renowned graphic artist Mister Cartoon, showing how their work has profoundly influenced the aesthetics of global urban culture.

Estevan Oriol‘s visual language is direct, iconic, and unfiltered: a mix of documentary photography, portraiture, and street photography that has helped define the visual imagery of the West Coast.

For the 2026 edition of the Milano Photo Awards, Estevan Oriol will be the Special Guest and the main exhibiting artist of the event.

His presence represents one of the highlights of the festival: a rare opportunity for the European audience to come into direct contact with one of the most important photographers of contemporary urban culture, and with an author who has documented thirty years of the visual history of American street culture from the inside.
